As It Happens

Before I begin this article, I must give a huge shout-out to my buddy Val Yelton Baul for causing me to be aware of this documentary film that is really timely for the era we are all living in. Thanks to all the #MeToo men and women who have come out of the shadows to put sunlight on these monstrous acts of power and intimidation committed by men and women in high positions. THANKS, VAL !!!

This 2015 documentary “The Mask You Live In” was written, directed, and produced by Jennifer Siebel Newsome, a documentary filmmaker, and actress.

“The Mask You Live In” examines societal expectations of boys and men in American culture. Males can’t be true to themselves in their feelings and emotions, always wearing a mask so they won’t be labeled as Gay or weak. This often results in tragic consequences for males and spills over on how females are treated by them. Boys and men usually go through loneliness, pain, and suffering when they pretend to be something they are not constantly proving their masculinity.

Watching this documentary on my laptop, Newsome did an excellent job of connecting the dots on America’s narrow definition of masculinity and how it is so hurtful and detrimental to boys and men. Seal was so right on when he sang the lyric from his hit “Killer”, “It’s the loneliness, that’s the killer.” America, in my opinion, can start the healing process by quit devaluing and demonize Bromances.
