As It Happens

“All your jokes should have a purpose.”
Robin Thede  ~ Comic

It is late Wednesday night October 11th, that I am writing this article. It is the eve of a new talk show “The Run Down with Robin Thede.” It will be making its debut on Black Entertainment TV (BET) at 11:30 pm to 12:00 am CT.

Before Robin had her own late night TV talk show, She was the Head writer for “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore.” Ms. Thede was the 1st Black woman to hold that role for a late night show.

When “The Rundown” premieres, She will be the only Black woman late-night host on air. Ms. Thede will be following in the footsteps of Whoopi Goldberg, Wanda Sykes, and Mo’Nique. Ms. Thede’s staff, the majority who will be women and people of color, have been busy building practice shows.

One of Ms. Thede’s 1st sit-down interview will be with California Congresswoman Maxine Waters aka “Auntie Maxine.” It was on the Monday after that trick occupying the White House, called NFL football players, “Sons of Bitches” who took a knee during The National Anthem to protest police brutality and racism.

Ms. Thede is from Davenport, Iowa. Her parent, Dave and Phyllis Thede named her after the late legendary comic Robin Williams. Her father Dave was and still is a teacher, Her mother Phyllis is a Democrat who sits on the Iowa State House of Representatives.

Robin recalled how she and her father would at times stay up late watching episodes of “Saturday Night Live.”

But, it was Whoopi Goldberg and the show “In Living Color that made a lasting impression on her in her formative years. Robin recalled it was a very eye-opening experience for her, seeing all these Black people on television making her laugh.

After “The Nightly Show” was canceled in August 2016, Ms. Thede said she was devastated, But with her experiences on that show, had her thinking she could do her own night TV talk show. But she decided it would be weekly and not nightly. That way her staff would have way more breathing room to craft the message she wanted to convey and to tighten the message.

Ms. Thede announced that her show will be different. It will focus equally on politics and pop culture. There will also be more sketches. Robin said her focus will primarily cover issues that are relevant to Black audiences.
